Gear for Small Weddings: What You Actually Need

4 October 2026 • 3 min read

Planning a small wedding? First off… congratulations! Whether it’s 20 guests in a country garden or 50 loved ones in a cosy hall, the right gear will help your special day run smoothly without going overboard.

At JET Event Hire, we’ve helped kit out dozens of beautiful small weddings across Coventry, Warwickshire, and Birmingham. Here’s our down-to-earth guide on what you actually need (and what you can happily skip).

1. Clear, Comfortable Sound

Have you ever been to a wedding (or any event) where you’re sat towards the back of the room and you can’t hear a word they’re saying at the front? If you’re anything like me it’ll annoy the hell out of you. You just want to walk down the aisle and sit cross legged at the alter just so you can hear the vows. Don’t let your wedding be like that.

Now i’m not saying that every event needs audio tech, if there’s 20 people in a small room you could be okay, but it’s always nice to not have to strain your voice or have grandma yelling from the back “what?!?”.

If you do feel like you need a little audio support to give your voice a boost or play background music as the guests are being seated, i’ve added a few options below for you to check out.

Bose L1 Compact portable line array PA system with integrated mixer and detachable speaker columns.

Bose L1 Compact PA Speaker

Perfect for indoor ceremony speeches, background music, and first dance tunes.
Electro-Voice ELX115 15 inch passive PA speaker front view with EV logo

EV ELX115 PA Speaker

Perfect for outdoor ceremony speeches, background music, and first dance tunes.

Wired Microphone

A wired mic is simple and reliable for speeches.
Sennheiser XSW 1-825-E wireless microphone system with handheld mic and receiver for event hire

Wireless Microphone

Wireless mics give a bit more freedom for moving around.

Pro Tip

One PA is usually plenty for ceremonies under 100 people.

2. Subtle, Beautiful Lighting

Lighting for a wedding ceremony is definitely a nice to have but they do help create a great atmosphere. For example the LED par cans below work great for up-lighting for the walls of a hall.

LED PAR Cans

  • Great for adding soft colour washes to walls or the dancefloor.
  • Creates a gorgeous atmosphere without looking like a nightclub.

Pro Tip

Warm white or soft amber colours work beautifully for weddings.

3. Weather Protection (If Outdoors)

English weather is unpredictable so I’d recommend (depending on the time of year) at least having some kind of shelter on standby. Best bet is to speak to a supplier and ask if they offer a deposit scheme to have it on standby if you need it. You don’t want your wedding to be rained off with no plan B.
